If you’v ever been intrigued by the enigmatic little adhesive treasures found in dense urban areas like NYC, then I recommend checking out an art book simply titled, Stickers. It’s authored by my good friend and colleague DB Burkeman, an old school cat who is largely responsible for pioneering the rave and drum & bass scene in the US . DB came to NYC in the 80′s, when graffiti and punk was still thriving, with already having an affinity for the medium in England, and like anyone coming to NYC with an artistic taste, immediately became enamored by the ever changing creative life of the street.

This book is the culmination of obsessively collecting stickers for many years, and even more so with the help of friends when he discovered he needed to share his collection with the world through this book.

Stickers is very comprehensive, it not only touches on the originating graffiti and punk cultures, but expands from skate graphics, to contemporary art, to big brands with cult followings.

Another reason why i’m plugging this thing. Two pages feature my handmade postal stickers from a couple street campaigns two summers ago (pictured above). It’s really an honor to share a book with some legendary artists and writers like Revs & Cost, and well, pretty much everyone who made a name for themselves. This book really is a who’s who.

The photos above are of the limited edition hard cover version (only 300). Which came with a bundle of hand signed stickers. The last shot is of Typcut artist Lee Trice’s contribution.

Os Gemeos and Futura recently collaborated on a huge mural here in the Chelsea neighborhood of NYC. I still have yet to check it out in person, but i hear it’s quite a breath taking spectacle. Futura’s contribution to the project is really a great compliment, it’s cool to see their styles mesh so well.

I also included a couple really well produced videos on both artists. Both Futura and Os Gemeos have such an impressive way of using their aerosol medium, the thin strokes that you’d really only get from airbrushing. I recommend reading up on Futura if you aren’t familiar with him, he’s got a quite an amazing career that began with painting trains in the 70′s to working with The Clash.

I also recommend following Os Gemeos on 12oz Prophet

C-215, one street artist who is consistently blowing my mind. He has got to be one of the most prolific guys out there right now. I did a post on him a while ago and since then, he has continued to push the boundaries of his ultra refined craft and style. If you look at the series of photos in this post, the bottom being what he was rocking a year ago, the middle when he started introducing color into his work, and the top being where he’s at now. What a gorgeous emergence from black and white, to muted washes, to straight fluorescence, accompanied with splatters adding more expression and energy. I don’t know how this guy makes so many stencils, he can’t just be using an exacto. If so, he better watch out for arthritis.

Check out this series he did for a show in London recently, great examples of where his work has evolved.

Them frenchies keep killin’ it!!

One thing about graffiti i find interesting, is it’s basically a career created out of a calligraphic / typographic study of one word, spanning over years and years. Funny to think about, considering all the different words designers set and manipulate through their career.

C215, one of the most prolific and talented street artists i’ve ever had the pleasure of seeing, almost daily in NYC, that’s how many ups he has. He is from Paris, but he spreads his beautiful work, all over world, from Brazil to India. This shot was taken in Brooklyn, in the DUMBO neighborhood where i used to work, sadly it’s been buffed (painted over). Take a peek at his flickr, it’s cool to see how complex is work has gotten over the years.

The other is Krink, a street inspired art supply company, started by KR, making high quality markers that rock really sharp branding and packaging. I’ve recently been experimenting using Krink on some of my paintings, it’s a really fun and expressive medium to work with.

I actually found Jen Lu through the Krink site, the design was well done so i had to see who was responsible. Jen has a well refined style, her cartoony mutant genitalia characters are pretty amusing, I love the sense of humor and willingness to cross the line in her work. I’ve invited her to contribute to Typcut, so keep an eye on the screen and a tentacle on the keyboard.
